Mr. Michael J. Merritt PO Box 294 Newton, IA 50208
The Ames Community School District received your request for public records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Iowa Open Records Act. The documents you requested that are public records are included in this communication.
The remaining documents are student records that are confidential under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law that affords parents the right to inspect and review their minor children’s education records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student (“eligible student”).
We have no record of you as a custodial parent or legal guardian for any student enrolled in our District. Before we can move forward with processing your request for records protected under FERPA, we will need you to provide us legal documentation (e.g., a custody decree, divorce decree, or other court order) that shows that you are the legal custodian of one or more students who are the subject of your request. Once we have this documentation, we will process your request in accordance with FERPA.
Please be advised the District is closed for the Winter Break from 12/23/21 – 1/4/22.
